Retirement planning models money for 30 years and says nothing about who you will speak to on a Tuesday. The contact a job supplies is free, unplanned, and gone in a single day, and the clubs everyone recommends substitute badly for a reason worth naming.
Moving mid-career, fluent enough to work and to argue with the bank, and still without a single friend two years in. The cost is not vocabulary. It is what a second language spends by evening, and the version of you that never makes it into the room.
The circle around a long-term condition contracts through attrition rather than rejection. Two mechanics do most of the work: the cancellation that lands the same morning, and the greeting nobody wants a truthful answer to.
Losing hearing rarely announces itself. It shows up as skipping the loud restaurant, going quiet at the end of the table, and leaving early, all of which the person experiences as taste rather than as a hearing problem.
Stopping takes out the venue, the recurring time and a share of the friendships in one move, and leaves five hours a night that used to be spoken for. An account of what the evenings are made of and what refills them.
